In chronic experiments male Wistar rats with cannulas implanted into the midbrain tegmentum were subjected to short-term painful stimulation preceded by microinjections of phenoxybenzamine or inderal. The reaction of the supraoptic neurohypophyseal system (SNS) and changes in the level of vasopressin-antidiuretic hormone in blood plasma showed significant inhibition of the SNS reaction to the pain under .alpha.-adrenoreceptor blockade. Changes in the functional SNS activity during .beta.-adrenorecptor blockade were shorter and less pronounced. Activating influences on the SNS during stress might be predominantly mediated by .alpha.-adrenoreceptors of the midbrain tegmentum.
