In order to find out the reliability of red cell Na levels in the diagnosis of thyrotoxicosis, 131I tracer studies and estimation of red cell Na were carried out in 218 patients with various thyroid disorders. Red cell Na was significantly high in nearly 80% of cases of thyrotoxicosis; but it was also significantly high in non-toxic goiter. High red cell Na values persisted in thyrotoxics in spite of treatment. When red cell Na was correlated with 24 and 48 h 131I uptakes and PB131I [protein bound 131I] values, no correlation was seen between red cell Na and 131I tracer studies. The estimation of red cell Na alone may not be useful in the diagnosis of thyrotoxicosis.
