Sensitivity and pyocinogenic activity of psychrophilic marine Pseudomonas

A selection was made of 55 strains of psychrophilic Pseudomonas of marine origin and their sensitivity and ability to produce pyocins was examined. For the primary selection 18 strains were grown on the same enriched culture medium, the only variation being the temperature: 15.degree. C and 37.degree. C. Of the 55 strain tested, only 21 were sensitive; resistant strains elaborate pyocins which are only partially active against the sensitive strains. The sensitive strains also produce the metabolite which affects some of the resistant ones. For these microorganisms which produce infections in marine fish population, the production of pyocins could serve as a marker for selecting some of these bacteria according to their habitat.
