The lipid composition and partial characterization of galactosylceramide sulfate ester or lactosylceramide sulfate ester obtained from a small biopsy of the gall bladder and liver from a child with metachromatic leukodystrophy [MLD] was presented. A 5 yr old boy was diagnosed with MLD including arylsulfatase-A deficiency in the white blood cells. An abnormal abdominal tumor originating from the gall bladder wall was detected and surgically removed. The gall bladder dysfunction of the patient with MLD may be due to the accumulation of glycolipids in the mucous layer of the wall with insufficient transport or absorption of bile juice across the wall.
