Various forms of host-virus interaction are discussed, with reference to data from the literature and the author's own studies. Two principle forms of interaction are delineated on the basis of the duration of the presence of the virus in the host: brief infections, including acute and inapparent infections, and prolonged infections, including persistent, latent, chronic and slow infections. Examples of viral infections in mice and humans are cited. Also discussed is the applicability of this type of viral infection classification to in vitro systems.
