Patterns of the behavior of mobile elements were considered from the viewpoint of interaction in the parasite-host system, using Drosophila retrotransposons and data on mobile element groups in some other organisms as an example. Interaction between a mobile element and host genome was analyzed. Present-day concepts of the role of mobile elements in phenotypic and genetic variability of the host were characterized. The presence of sites that regulate their interaction with host in these mobile elements was discussed. Data were summarized on the genetic control of the behavior of mobile elements by host's genome as were the results of the author's own studies that made it possible to describe the effect of mobile elements on organism adaptation, analyze sex specificity of transposition processes, study the possibility of the self-regulation of the number of mobile element copies in genome, demonstrate correlation between transposition frequency and mobile element transcription level, map loci that control transposition frequency and mobile element transcription level.
