The antibacterial action of cholic, desoxycholic, glycocholic, choleic and dehydrocholic acids was studied on 45 strains of staphylococci isolated from bile of the patients with viral hepatitis and to 15 museum cultures. Desoxycholic acid manifested the highest bacteriostatic and bactericidal activity. Dehydrocholic acid had no essential effect on growth and reproduction of the bacteria. A higher resistance to some bile acids is established for staphylococci inoculated from bile. This should be taken into account when developing problems of pathogenesis and a method for treating the bacterial infections of the hepatobiliary system.
