Polynucleotide complexes were studied: poly(I) .cntdot. poly(C), poly(G) .cntdot. poly(C) and poly(G,I) .cntdot. poly(C). Poly(G) and poly(G,I) were synthesized using Escherichia coli polynucleotide phosphorylase. Antiviral and interferonogenic activity of the complexes were determined in chick embryo, mouse embryo and rabbit kidney cell cultures infected with vesicular stomatitis virus and in mice infected with tick-borne encephalitis virus. DEAE dextran increased the antiviral activity of all the studied complexes in all cell cultures. Differences in the activity of the complexes were not a function of differences in their sensitivity to pancreatic RNAse, the rate of their interaction with cells or their toxicity. The significance in the purine base of the polynucleotides and of the correspondence of their structure to cellular receptors are discussed.
