Rous sarcoma virus was oncogenic for Testudo horsfieldi, Agama sanguinolenta, A. erythrogasta, Eremias persica, E. velox, E. grammica, Eumeces taeniolatus, Erix tataricus and Ancistrodon blomhoffi. It was not oncogenic for 13 other reptile species. Histologically, 26 reptile tumours studied were polymorphous sarcomas with spindle-shaped (fibroblast-like) round and polygonal macrophage-like cells, with occasional unusual giant polynuclear cells. Chromosome analysis showed that the tumours were formed from reptile cells. Rous sarcoma virus was pathogenic for adult reptiles. Reptile tumours did not contain mature infective virus. The tumours of two snakes were virus-producing.
