The effect of the Prague strain of Rous sarcoma virus (PR-RSV), at a concentration of 1.95 .times. 105 FFU [focus-forming unit], on the chromosomes of Chinese hamster embryonal fibroblasts was studied. In 48 and 94 h after virus infection the cells exhibited a significantly higher incidence of chromosome breakage and translocation than the control cells. Detailed analysis of the aberrations revealed gaps and breaks of chromatid and chromosome type, ring chromosomes and acentric and dicentric chromosomes. Premature chromosome condensation (pulverization) was an additional effect of the PR-RSV infection. [This has applications to the study of viral oncogenesis.].
