Comparative evaluation of diagnostic methods in giardiasis

Of 53 patients with gastro-intestinal symptoms investigated in India, 30 had Giardia lamblia trophozoites in duodenal aspirates and 18 of these had trophozoites in impression smears of intestinal biopsies. 22 of the 30 were found (by formol-ether concentration technique) to have cysts in their faeces and the other 8 showed cysts at a 2nd examination. 2 stool examinations by formol-ether concentration are considered the best method of diagnosis.
