Adult Dutch rabbits in 4 groups of 7 of average initial weight 1923 g were fed for 8 weeks on standard cubed feed made with no lignosulphonate binder. For 3 groups the drinking water had sodium, calcium or magnesium lignosulphonate dissolved at 40 g/litre. Average gain was 293 g with water alone and 44, 107 and 236 g with the Na, Ca and Mg salts. Intakes of lignosulphonate for the groups given it were 2.32, 2.16 and 2.00 g/kg bodyweight. With Na or Ca salt 4 rabbit developed ulcers in the colon and caecum, and 2 and 1 died. There was no ulceration with magnesium lignosulphonate, and this salt should be used as a binding agent in pellets for rabbits.
