Folic acid and its tetrahydro-, 5-methyltetrahydro- and dihydro-derivatives were separated in less than 75 min by chromatography on the anion-exchange resin, Pellionex SAX, with a KCl gradient in phosphate buffer, pH 7.5, as eluent. The smallest amount of folic acid which could be estimated reliably was 35 pmol/10 mu l placed on the column. The contribution of individual forms of folacin to the total content of foods varied widely.
