Over a 3-yr period, 202 German Red Pied heifers were injected twice at 11-day intervals with 0.5 mg Estrumate. Insemination was carried out once in 100 animals, 72 h after the last PG treatment (group 1), twice in 71 animals, after 72 and 96 h (group 2), and also once, after 72 h, in 31 animals which received an additional injection of 0.5 mg GnRH at the time of insemination (group 3). 69 untreated heifers served as controls. Oestrus was synchronised in 78.7% of the treated animals 2-4 days after Estrumate was given. In the 3 treated groups resp., CRs to 1st insemination were 60.0, 68.0 and 58.1% v 73.9 for controls. Pregnancy rates for synchronised animals ranged from 88.7 to 100.0% over the years v 95.7% for controls. Synchronised heifers that returned to service appeared to have longer oestrous cycles than controls.
