Estrus and conception in cattle following cycle synchronization and HCG-administration

Oestrus was synchronised in 2 German Red Pied experimental herds totalling 73 cows by daily oral application for 18 days of 10 mg CAP. 35 heifers (group 1) were also given 1000 IU HCG intravenously 3 days after the end of CAP treatment and were inseminated 6, 30 or 54 h later. 38 heifers (group 2) were not given HCG, but were inseminated at the same times. Treatment with HCG caused a shortening in the duration of signs of oestrus (secretion of mucus, presence of ripe follicles, uterine contraction and opening of the cervix) and a reduction in the amount of mucus secreted. The CR to 1st insemination was 20% lower in group 1 than in group 2.
