Serum opsonins for early diagnosis of disseminated candidiasis

Twenty-three sera from normal donors were tested for opsonic activity (OA) and 8 had heat-stable OA. In all cases, this was abolished at dilutions >1:40. A titre of 1:160 was chosen as positive for acute infection. Nine patients with blood cultures positive for Candida albicans or C. parapsilosis were studied. In 8, OA was >1:80. Diagnoses in these patients included acute myelogenous leukaemia (1), status postcardiac surgery (3), disseminated carcinomatosis (2), and status postlaparotomy with peritonitis (2). A neonate with systemic C. infection complicating necrotizing enterocolitis had no heat-stable OA.
