Plasmapheresis in hyperimmunized horses--technique and observations

A technique of plasmapheresis in hyperimmunized horses was described. Over a period of 5 yr the operation of plasmapheresis was carried out 5000 times with only a few adverse transfusion reactions. Preliminary observations recorded on various aspects of plasmapheresis, health of the horse, antibody titer and transfusion reactions were described and discussed. This is the 1st large scale effort of plasmapheresis of hyperimmune horses in India. Adoption of plasmapheresis by serum producing laboratories will probably enhance the production by reduction in bleeding interval.
