Monoamine and monoamine oxidase histochemical identification in the cat rhomboid reticular formation nuclei showed that 1% of the reticular neurons were monoaminergic. The noradrenergic neurons were found in the lateral reticular nucleus and in the lateral parts of the oral-caudal nuclei of the pons. There were neurons with ascending and descending projections among them. The serotoninergic neurons were localized in the ventrolateral region of the medulla oblongata nucleus gigantocellularis. A considerable part of the reticular neurons with and without monoamines possessed aminoceptive properties, as monoaminergic terminals were found on them. Small serotonin- and monoamine oxidase-containing cells of unknown nature with numerous processes were observed on reticular neurons.
