4 cows with poor milk yields were treated at drying-off with the protective product Prevolac (10 cm3/quarter, administered intracisternally). Prevolac, manufactured by Dr. E. Graub AG, Berne, Switzerland, contains 250 000 IU NN'-dibenzylethylenediamine-penicillin G, 250 000 IU penicillin G procaine, 5000 IU zinc bacitracin, 100 000 IU vitamin A and ointment base less than or equal to 10 g. The cows were slaughtered 30 days after treatment. Histological examination of samples from all quarters revealed no morphological evidence of pathological changes. Involution was normal in all cases. There was some evidence that milk fat formed in the epithelium was reabsorbed into the body at drying-off by phagocytosis.
