Combined action of some antibiotics and bile acids on bacteria of the genus Proteus

Sensitivity to novobiocin, penicillin and streptomycin was studied for 10 freshly isolated Proteus strains. The isolated cultures were the most sensitive to novobiocin. The in vitro experiments for combined application of the antibiotics with deoxycholic, dehydrocholic, glycocholic, cholic and choleic bile acids showed a considerable increase in the antibiotics, antimicrobial effect. Bile acids significantly intensify the bacteriostatic and bactericidal effect of penicillin and streptomycin and inhibit the antimicrobic activity of novobiocin. Combinations of glycocholic acid with penicillin and deoxycholic acid with streptomycin were the most effective.
