The paper was given as a lecture to the ASEAN Congress of Cardiology at Bali in October 1975. Marriage guidance has been considered for persons with disorders such as thalassaemia and perhaps there should be advice against intermarriage of families with coronary risk factors, especially hyperlipoproteinaemia. Western influence is discouraging arranged marriage, in which the family elders did consider such matters. Serum lipid and uric acid and blood sugar should be estimated during periodic medical examination of schoolchildren or of civil servants and applicants for employment. The author for 10 years has lectured to groups such as feeders' organizations or Rotary Clubs, on the importance of non-atherogenic diet, and now in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, many families take diets low in animal fat and with moderate energy content; they use maize or sunflower seed oil rather than the cheaper traditional coconut oil. The effects of stress and contraceptive pills are considered. A planned and organized effort to curb coronary artery disorder should be begun by the government now, instead of waiting for further scientific evidence.
