'Farmer's lung' in the horse

A form of allergic pneumonitis which clinically and pathologically corresponds to farmer's lung of man has been studied in eight horses. The disease was characterized by eosinophilia of the peripheral blood and nasal secretions, intrα- cutaneous responses to allergenic mixtures of dust from food and bedding and by development of precipitins for Micropolyspora faeni and Aspergillus fumigants. The clinical course of attacks of dyspnea and coughing also are in keeping with the diagnosis of farmer's lung. Pathological changes in the lungs begin as acute interstitial peumonitis, hyaline membrane formation, infiltration by mononuclear cells and widespread formation of intravascular fibrin masses. These changes progress to a chronic state with epithelial hyperplasia and fibrosis of the lung parenchyma. Thus, the diagnosis of farmer's lung is confirmed by clinical and serological changes, as well as by structural tissue changes.
