The left vertebral artery has an anomalous origin from the aorta in 4.0-6% of cases. This is of importance in angiographic technique and interpretation of the left subclavian angiography. Analysis of 21 patients encountered in 400 consecutive studies indicates that this vessel can be catheterized in the majority of instances. The value of this finding to technique selection in vertebral angiography is stressed.
