The effect of overnutrition and undernutrition during different periods of life on the cellularity of rat epididymal fat pads was studied. Overnutrition in the suckling period (first 3 wk of life) causes a significantly greater increment in epididymal fat than in rats underfed in the same period. The difference results from both hyperplasia and hypertrophy of fat cells. Rats overfed from the 3rd till the 10th wk also exhibit excess epididymal fat which is due mostly to hyperplasia and much less to hypertrophy of adipose tissue. Rats overfed between the 13th and the 20th week characteristically show hypertrophy only, and the number of adipocytes remain unchanged.
