This paper is based on the first of two Heath Clarke Lectures delivered at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, University of London. The second lecture appears in Immunology (1989) 67, 141-147. The effects of protein-energy malnutrition and selected nutrient deficiencies on immunity are reviewed with particular reference to high-risk age groups. The effects of overnutrition, including obesity or an excess intake of certain nutrients, are also considered. Possible intervention strategies which can reduce the incidence and adverse health impact of both malnutrition and infection are discussed.
