Li+, in concentrations of 0.2-1.0 mM, promotes tubulin polymerization, provided small concentrations of Mg2+ are present. This effect of Li on polymerization, at suboptimal concentration of Mg, is additive for the 2 metal ions. Both Li+ and Mg2+ protect microtubules against the depolymerizing effects of colchicine or vinblastine.
