Seventeen strains of E. histolytica were studied to determine if they could selectively hemolyze red blood cells of different species. Four strains could hemolyze human red blood cells and those of sheep and dog. Three other strains produced hemolysis of human and sheep cells only. The remaining strains could hemolyze red blood cells of human, sheep, dog and rabbit. The selective ability to hemolyze red blood cells could be utilized as a parameter for differentiation of strains of E. histolytica.
