Effect of high ambient temperature on cell division rate of fertilized ova in heat-acclimatized rats

In groups of virgin females kept at 22 deg plus or minus 2 deg C with 35-50% RH and at 35 deg plus or minus 1 deg with 25-40% RH for 30 days before exposure to males , 60 and 67 females resp. showed signs of mating (spermatozoa in vaginal smear), with CRs of 80.0 and 73.1%. Of the 387 and 388 eggs produced by females in these 2 groups, 95.9 and 91% showed the presence of a 2nd polar body and a pronucleus on the morning after mating, 86.7 and 75.0% were at the 2-cell stage on the 2nd day after mating, 98.9 and 92.4% consisted of 2-4 cells on the 3rd day after mating, and 80.6 and 43.7% contained 7-12 cells on the 4th day after mating.
