Reimplantation of the Epiphysial Cartilage in the Reverse Position

The distal epiphysial cartilage of the radius or ulna was resected, partly with the perichondrium, partly without it, and replanted in reverse position, the distal surface of the cartilage being oriented proximally. Thirty two rabbits of 1-8 days of age were used. The epiphysial cartilage is bipolar at this period. The typical polarity of the cartilage did not change after the operation. The epiphysial layer of the cartilage formed the correspondent part of the epiphysis as in the normal condition and the metaphysial layer formed the diaphysis in the reverse, distal direction. This fact speaks against the existence of the humoral factors of osseous, epiphysial or diaphysial origin, whicht, according to literature, have to influence on the growth of the cartilage. In 14 rabbits the perichondrium was separated and the cartilage reversed in the perichondrial sheath. In these cases the growth cartilage directs the activity of the perichondrium, left in situ, or may induce the differentiation of the new perichondrium. Only 3 rabbits, operated at the age of 1 dny, behaved in a different way. A new epiphysial cartilage regenerated around the reversed graft.
