Results of serologic typing of a series of Group A streptococci isolated from various clinical diseases in patients living in S India are reported. Of the 639 isolates, 95% were T-typable and 19% of 113 strains tested were M-typable. T-type 14 was the predominant type from pharyngitis patients. Next in order of frequency were T-types 4, 28, 9, 11, 2, 44, B3264, 3/13, 12 and 13. In pyoderma patients and in miscellaneous pyogenic lesions, T-type 11 strains were the commonest followed by T-types 14, B3264, 9 and 28. The total number of strains from rheumatic fever (RF) patients were too few to establish an epidemiological pattern. From the pyoderma lesions preceding acute glomerulonephritis (AGN), T-14 and T-9 predominated. The high frequency of T-type 11 pyogenic lesions was unique. T-type 12, the commonest nephritogenic strain elsewhere, was encountered only rarely at Vellore. T-14 strains (M-type 49), found throughout the world, were found in pharyngitis and pyogenic infections at Vellore. The M-typability of strains was very low. M-1, M-11, M-39 and M-55 were some of the more common M-types encountered.
