The electrophoresis chamber can be fabricated from easily available materials in a short time. It has Al electrodes and blocks of polyurethane foam sponges soaked in buffer to serve as buffer-containers. Electrical continuity is achieved by merely inverting gel-covered slides to bridge opposite sponges. Filter-paper wicks are unnecessary. The volume of buffer required for 1 slide is only 30 ml. Excellent, rapid and reproducible results were obtained. The apparatus is suitable for use in blood banks for the routine screening of sera for the hepatitis B antigen.
