The flow rate of digesta was measured in the proximal duodenum and distal ileum of 3 pigs with re-entrant cannulae, with phenol red and polyethylene glycol as indicators. The flow rate of both indicators along the small intestine was similar. Phenol red seems more suitable for estimating the flow rate of digesta, as it can be estimated more easily and rapidly than polyethylene glycol in digesta samples.
