Comparative analysis of the kinetics of populations of enterocytes from different portions of the rat small and large intestine. I. Rate of migration and model of the life cycle of enterocytes

During cell migration in the direction of surface layers of mucosae , the rate of this process decreases, apparently because of the differences in configuration of crypts and villi at various levels. The average value of duration of the mitotic cycle calculated for enterocytes in the intestine and colon are 11-11.5 and 18-28 h, respectively. A model of the enterocyte life cycle permitting the branching of cell flux in the mitotic cycle is proposed.
