Six normal Indian subjects (5 males, 1 female) were given a diet low in folic acid, 15 mu g/day. Folacin deficiency developed after 6 weeks as evidenced by subnormal serum folacin and declining erythrocyte folacin levels. The diet was then supplemented with graded doses from 25 to 100 mu g folic acid/day. The dose at which both serum and erythrocyte folacin regained normality was considered to be the minimum daily folic acid requirement; in the normal Indian subjects this was 75 mu g/day.
