Creatinine clearance studies in normal Indian subjects. A preliminary report

Creatinine clearance was studied in 100 normal men and women 20 to 30 years old from Bombay. A table compares the creatinine clearance of the subjects with that reported in the literature and shows that the value of 120 litres/day for the Indian subjects was significantly lower than values reported for those in Western countries. The clearance values in the men were slightly higher than those of the women. There was no significant difference between those of vegetarians and non-vegetarians; where vegetarians were asked to take a full meat diet for 12 days, their clearance values went up considerably. Calculation of creatine clearance from a 2-h urine collection was a true representative of that obtained from a 24-h urine collection.
