Estimates of energy intakes by infants of different ages are presented, based on published data, market research information and sales statistics for manufactured infant foods. For ages up to 12 months the proportions of energy derived from different sources are estimated, also the percentages of infants having breast milk, milk-based formulae, milk-free formulae, evaporated milk and fresh cow's milk. The age at which solid foods are introduced, the relative importance of different types of manufactured food and food provided from the same source as that for the rest of the family are studied. Adjustments have been made to allow for the under-representation of lower socioeconomic groups in some of the surveys. It is considered that more data are required on the distribution of energy between manufactured infant foods and home-produced ingredients.
