Observations conducted in summer 1961 in Krasnoyarsk region, on the river will water discharge of about 500 ma/sec. showed that larvae of Simulium galeratum S. morsitans longipalpe, Byssodon transiens and Gnus jacuticum migrate down streatm to a distance of about 100 kilometers and gradually repopulate areas free(from them after treatment of the river with DDT. In periods of high prevalence of larvae, in June and July, and with a high speed of the current, the treated areas of the river are repopulated much faster and at longer distances than in periods of lower incidence of black-fly larvae in August, after the emergence of the second generation of black flies and lower speeds of the current at this time. In treated areas, of the river black fly larvae appear later than could have been expected with the corresponding speed of the current, which appears to be associated with step-wise migration of larvae. Considering the possibilities of long-distant migrations of larvae (in rivers with unregulated or only partially regulated current). Successful control black flies requires repeated treatment of the river with insecticides during summer time. Early in the season the treatments should be carried out more frequently and for greater distances than at the end of the season.
