Avoidance of scouring by larvae of Simulium vittatum (Diptera: Simuliidae) during a spring flood

The larvae of Simulium vittatum in the Nanticoke River, Ontario, disappear from their normal microhabitat during spring floods, only to reappear as soon as water levels return to normal. In February 1985, larvae were found clustered on the underwater portions of thin branches of shrubs growing out of the river bank. Others were found under a flat rock and on a log buried in the river gravel. Water currents were found to be considerably slower in such sheltered microhabitats.
