From a review of the literature it was calculated that the normal daily intake of Se from food was about 100 mu g, half of which came from fish and shellfish for an average adult Japanese. Intake of Se from other sources was negligible. Amount of Se excreted in urine was compatible with the calculated daily intake. Range of safety margin was calculated to be 10 to 200 times the normal intake. Variation of intake was discussed, and it was concluded that those eating large amounts of fish may get Se 125 to 225 mu g, or from extremely large amounts 500 mu g. Consequently 500 mu g is proposed as the tentative maximum acceptable daily intake of Se for man.
