Outbred and golden hamsters were immunized with a saline extract of adult Fasciola hepatica or the large molecular weight fraction of such an extract chromatographed on Sephadex G-200. Both preparations contained antigens which were shown to cross react with those found in adult Schistosoma mansoni. Immunized mice and hamsters showed a significant resistance to infection by cercariae of S. mansoni compared with a control group immunized with bovine serum albumin. The mechanism of the protective effect is discussed.
