Body Wall Fine Structure of the Anterior Region of Meloidogyne incognita and Heterodera glycines Males

The results are given of electron microscope studies of sections from the anterior region of males of Meloidogyne incognita and Heterodera glycines. The fine structure of the body wall is similar in the two species. The cuticle is basically 3-layered and about twice as thick in M. incognita as in H. glycines; there are also differences in surface markings. The hypodermis is syncytial and is found in the lip region and lining the stomatal cavity and stylet shaft. Its probable function in the formation of the cephalic framework and stylet is considered. Consideration is also given to the possible role in lipid metabolism of various organelles and other structures in the chords. The interchordal hypodermis encloses the peripheral nerves and is traversed by bundles of fibrils which are homologous with the subcuticular striation observed with the light microscope. The somatic musculature is meromyarian and the muscle cells are of the platymyarian type.
