The safety of an ethyl 2-cyanoacrylate-containing instant adhesive for orthodontic use was investigated employing rabbit mucous membrane irritancy test. Inflammatory changes which did not exceed an average score of 2+ were observed in 66% of animals 72 hr after a single intravaginal application of the adhesive (10+-3 mg/rabbit). Persistent histopathological changes were observed in 2 out of 6 rabbits 15 days post-application of the adhesive. The results suggest that ethyl 2-cyanoacrylate may not be a primary irritant but nevertheless be employed with caution.
