Influence of Meloidogyne incognita on the content of amino acids and nicotine in tobacco grown under gnotobiotic conditions

Seedlings of Meloidogyne incognita-resistant (N.C. 95) and susceptible (McNair 30) tobacco cultivars were grown aseptically for 55 days inside isolator chambers in autoclaved soil infested with none or with 3,000 axenized M. incognita eggs/500 ml soil. Dry root weights of infested resistant and susceptible plants were 16 and 84% less, respectively, than uninfected controls. Amounts of 16 amino-acids (including nicotine precursors) and nicotine were significantly greater in infected roots of both cultivars. Nematode infection increased nicotine content of leaves by 112% in N.C. 95 and decreased it by 56% in McNair 30.
