Reaction of explants of embryonal myocardium cultured in vitro to ethrane and fluothane anesthesia

Embryonic myocardial explants (probably chick embryos) were used to test the effect of the new inhalation anesthetic Ethrane [2-chloro-1,1,2-trifluoro-difluoromethyl ether] on the frequency (chronotropic) and strength of contractions (inotropic effect) in comparison with the effect of the anesthetic Fluothane. Both anesthetics directly affect the functional activity of the embryonic myocardium. At a comparable anesthetic potency, the negative inotropic effect of Ethane is less pronounced than that of Fluothane; the blocking effect is less effective.
