Sensitivity of Staphylococcus aureus to staphylococcinogenic strains and staphylococcal phages

In a collection of 652 S. aureus strains isolated from patients and carriers, within phage groups the bacteriocin types were distinguished including strains similar in their sensitivity to staphylococcinogenic strains. Staphylococci of phage group I showed highly differentiated bacteriocin sensitivity. Strains of phage group II were classified into 2 types of sensitivity and strains of group III into 3 types, the 3rd type including strains of phage type 88 only. Phage type and bacteriocin type were correlated most frequently when the strains originated from 1 environment. Active strains probably can be used for bacteriocin typing of staphylococci. This might be useful for epidemiological inquiry and identification of the strain and might complement phage typing.
