The addition of a hydrophobic moiety to a polyether chain enhances the extent of interaction markedly if one compares the complexing tendencies of the Tweens with polyethylene glycols. Since most of the nonionic surfactants used in formulation work are compounds possessing good hydrophobic and hydrophilic groups we can expect many incompatibilities to arise, particularly in emulsion formulations. Hadgraft (14) prepared a number of emulsions and creams using nonionic surfactants. All of the formulations containing phenolic compounds, phenol, salicylic acid, and resorcinol showed separation on storage at room temperature.
