In the Sepik district of Papua New Guinea, all of 19 patients with arthritis were found to have circulating Wuchereria bancrofti microfilariae. Diethylcarbamazine therapy produced a complete loss of symptoms in 8 patients and marked improvements in 8 others, supporting the view that the nematode was responsible for the arthritic condition. The author believes that filarial infection should be carefully considered in the differential diagnosis of arthritis in the Papua New Guinea area.
