Algal infection in a corn snake (Elaphe guttata guttata)

A rapidly growing subcutaneous mass was detected at the site of removal of a skin lesion which had developed over approx. 1 yr on the ventrolateral surface of the neck region of a 3-yr-old corn snake held in captivity. Removal of the second lesion was accompanied by extensive bleeding, and the animal died. Both lesions were composed of large cells, which tended to occur in tetrads, and were surrounded by extensive granulation tissue. The cells were identified as Prototheca sp.
