Effect of folic acid on serum and liver cholesterol in rats fed casein at two levels

Male rats were fed on folic acid-deficient diets containing 6 or 25% casein without or with a supplement of folic acid 0.04 mg daily. After 6 weeks rats on the 25% casein diet had significantly lower serum cholesterol values than those on the 6% casein diet. At either casein level rats given folic acid showed significant increases in serum cholesterol with concomitant decreases in liver cholesterol. No inverse relation between dietary protein and serum cholesterol was observed in rats on the folic acid-deficient diets.
