Male albino rats weighing 70 to 90 g, in 5 groups of 6 rats each, were given a basal 6% casein diet to appetite, with or without added lysine 2g/100g diet, arginine 0.4 g/100g or methionine 1.2g/100g, for 3 weeks when they were killed and their livers were removed. When lysine or arginine was added to the low-casein diet liver lipids and fatty acids were significantly reduced, falling by 33 and 22%, respectively, with lysine and by 46 and 34% with arginine. When both lysine and arginine were added to the diet the values fell still further. When methionine was added liver lipids rose and liver fatty acids rose significantly. In the lysine-supplemented group plasma lysine rose very significantly and plasma arginine fell and in the arginine-supplemented group plasma arginine rose significantly; when both amino acids were given plasma arginine was unaltered but plasma lysine rose significantly.
